Social Bookmarking – Share the World
Many have heard of social media websites, and many understand the principle. You log into your site, and then let people know what you are doing, have done, are going to do, and then show them the videos and pictures. It’s a very simple two way system, where people can comment on these events, and you can chat in real-time about anything you like. It is basically the chat room evolved. Anyone who still remembers the early Yahoo! chat boards and MSN, before the chat rooms were taken away, will not be shocked at the popularity of facebook and Twitter – because people like people. Even with the early modes of online chat, it was clear to see how addictive and viral it was.
By simply creating an account, you can then tell the world about all the various sites you have visited and your opinion of each. “Stumble upon” sites are fantastic, because you are surfing sites that people enjoy on a regular basis – all by clicking a simple ‘like’ button. Similarly, with other social bookmarking sites, you can of course attach a button to your browser, and hit it whenever you like a site, and the info will be sent directly to your bookmarks page, along with a summary if you wish.
If you surf a lot, then social bookmarking can be great. Not only does it track your surfing habits, but it also helps you remember just exactly where that obscure link was five months ago, when you were trekking in the Andes.
