The Internet Undermines Regulation Geared Towards E-cigarettes
Once again the internet has made it possible for legislation to be undermined. While Governments all over the world are trying to ban e-cigarettes, the internet makes it possible to get them whenever you want. While passing laws is hard enough, now legislators have to also find a way to deal with online trade that basically makes any new laws irrelevant.
This is not the first time this has happened and it certainly won't be the last. The internet has always and will continue to cause challenges for lawmakers. The internet has dramatically increased the amount of e-cigarettes that are being purchased worldwide. Especially since the cost of regular cigarettes is constantly going up.
And the laws that are in place to prevent this are becoming more and more ineffective. Because of this politicians are having to debate the impact the internet has on governing. There is no need in going through the process of making laws if they can easily be broken via the internet.
Even still, experts are lining up to argue e cigarettes are not healthy. While many have used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, some experts believe they reinforce the smoking habit. They believe they are dangerous because of certain elements they contain. And while that might be true, there is no evidence that proves e-cigarettes are safe or dangerous. Therefore no real conclusion can be drawn.
According to an ACT health spokeswoman in Australia, e-cigarettes have not been properly tested according to Australian standards. Since many smokers believe smoking e-cigarettes can help them quit, it would be a good idea for regulators to step up and rigorously test the device. Until there is hard evidence proving they are dangerous, people will continue to smoke them.
And since so many people have had success with them, their popularity will continue to grow. The internet will only add to the continued popularity. And if e-cigarettes truly aren't safe, that can spell out serious health problems for millions of people.
Truth is, without proper research, no one will ever know. That's why it is important that the Government does its job and find out if e-cigarettes are harmful or safe. No new laws or regulation should be passed until there is true evidence to go by.
Its a pity, but like most important things, the Government will drag their feet and not attempt to do anything about it until its too late or until their tobacco buddies come a calling and complaining about all the money they are losing because of e-cigarettes.
