More And More Smokers Turning To E-cigarettes To Quit Smoking
Jonathan Foulds, a professor of public health sciences, did a survey on 104 people who have used e-cigarettes for a year or more. Of those 104, 78 percent said no longer use regular cigarettes and will continue to use e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are becoming more and more popular by the day. Because of this people are questioning whether or not they can help them quit smoking.
And while they have helped a lot of people quit, there is still no scientific evidence to back this up. That's because e-cigs aren't made by pharmaceutical companies. That means there are no trials that must be done in order to get approved by the FDA.
E-cigarettes a very similar to traditional cigarettes. The big difference is that there is no smoke involved. Instead you will be using a nicotine liquid that is turned into a vapor that is inhaled and exhaled. So no longer are you taking in over 3000 harmful chemicals.
Smoking cigarettes causes over 400,000 deaths every year in the United States. 19 percent of adults, or 45 million people smoke cigarettes in the US. Just imagine what that number is worldwide. During Foulds research he found that most people who used e-cigarettes had quit smoking. He also found that only 8 percent of people were using the most popular brands of e-cigarettes.
Most have found that the most popular brands don't deliver an adequate amount of nicotine. According to Foulds, “e-cigarettes have the potential to replace the cigarette industry.” He believes that e-cigarettes have a lot of potential and can help a lot of people quit smoking. Mainly because there is no extreme behavior change that has to take place. A smoker will still be smoking just like they did before. The only different is with electronic cigarettes they won't be smoking all those harmful chemicals.
As stated before, there is still more research that needs to be done on electronic cigarettes. Even still, more and more smokers are turning to the device to help them quit smoking. And so far the results are looking pretty good.
