Creation of New Database Relating To Online Payday Loans
On November 16, 2011, Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, decided to create a database for the people currently availing payday loans. He wants that the people should avail only on loan at a time so that they do not entangle themselves in the infinite loop of debt. The advocates who were helping the weaker section of the society were relieved by this decision whereas the payday lenders were against this. The payday lenders put their views forward before the Business and Labor Interim Committee. “It’s a matter of invasion of privacy. My customers don’t want a Big Brother government database watching them and preventing loans,” said Wendy Gibson, a district manager for Check City. He told this on behalf of the Utah Consumer Loan Association.
In Utah, the lenders charge 521 APR. Brad Daw claims that people avail more and more loans to fulfill the need of previous ones. He has come across many such cases. According to Brad Daw this kind of database has already been created in Florida and is running successfully. Passing of such bill would end up the never ending battle regarding online payday loan instant approval.
Moreover Mike Hanna who works with Veritec Solutions operates on similar database. This has reduced many people from getting bankrupt. To support this statement Art Sutherland, spokesman for the Coalition of Religious Communities said, “We like the idea and have sought it for years. It could help stop loans to people who cannot afford them.”
