The internet makes it possible for people to watch free movies online like never before. The problem is that watching movies without paying for them is considered illegal, or is it. The matter has been looked into and some of the findings were interesting.

What it means to watch free movies online

People who are against the idea that it is not ethical to watch free movies online feel that people against it do not know what they are talking about. “It is not necessarily illegal”, is what some of them say. Believe it or not such statements may actually be true.

In regards to copyright infringement, it is only illegal if you try to use the intellectual property in other ways. Copyright included rights to manufacture, produce, and distribute certain types of work, not watch it.

Case example

Let’s say that Walmart decided to show a full version of a movie that is currently out in theaters or DVD without the owner’s permission, the police are not going to arrest all of the people shopping at Walmart at the time.

Certain websites that offer people the ability to watch free movies online have been shut down by the federal government. Once upon a time such sites were not viewed as being illegal, because they simply hosted or linked to videos that actually were illegally being used.

Aiding in distribution

Certain websites that offer people the chance to watch free movies online are being shut down because the government says they are aiding in the distribution of stolen property. It is illegal to download movies, copy them or burn them to DVD, especially if you did not pay for it. However, it is not illegal to watch it on someone else’s website, that is the argument.

Those who are for being able to watch free movies online say it is more a matter of ethics rather than something they should be punished or fined for.
