Is Biotin A Miracle Supplement For Hair?
Biotin, or Vitamin H as it is popularly known, is considered a miracle supplement for the development of healthy hair, beautiful, glowing skin and strong nails. Many women suffering from severe hair loss or alopecia, which is not related to hormonal conditions, are often prescribed biotin supplements along with other dietary changes.
Biotin is a water soluble B-complex vitamin, that our body, unfortunately, does not store .One has to ingest it daily. There are several natural sources of biotin in foods like eggs, walnuts, peanuts, whole-wheat breads, pork, salmon, soybean, cauliflower etc. If such foods are not part of the daily diet, one can get biotin through supplements. Most multi vitamin pills already contain biotin in some amounts.
Scientifically, it has been proven that biotin increases hair growth and prevents scalp dryness. Patients, who took 3000 milligrams of biotin daily, for a period of over six months, experienced stronger nails, reduced acne and reduced hair fall. Although there is no known Tolerable Upper Limit for biotin, and research has proved that high levels of biotin intake by human has no known detrimental effects, it is best to take a doctor’s advice before starting a supplement.
Contrary studies also suggest that vitamin H /biotin deficiency is extremely rare as our body naturally produces it with the help of intestinal bacteria. Hence several doctors do not recommend a daily biotin supplement and emphasize on good daily diet instead.
