Man is Released from Prison After 28 Years
Could you ever picture yourself locked behind bars for a crime you did not commit? What would you do if you were one of the wrongfully accused that has slipped through the cracks of justice? Barney Brown got to experience asking himself those questions first hand 38 years ago. Barney was wrongfully convicted of rape and burglary, twice and has now been released. Barney is now talking to high-school students and trying to get his message across.
According to the Miami Herald, Brown was sentenced in 1970 as a juvenile for robbery and rape. Barney served his sentence four days in a juvenile detention center in Miami. Then once he turned 15 he was tried as an adult after a second hearing. Unfortunately, for Barney he was convicted and found guilty for rape. Sentenced to life in prison, he didn't know what to do. The only thing left was hope. Barney says he “never gave up hope that he would one day be released and the truth would be revealed”.
According to CBS news, Barney was convicted of raping a woman and robbing her husband. The incident happened on a Saturday in March when a few neighborhood kids pressured him into leaving his home and going with them on their reckless adventures. Barney said they called him a “mamma's boy” and “sissy.” His mother told him to stay inside the house, while she went shopping. After Barney was arrested and placed into an unknown juvenile detention center, Barney's mother was never notified that he had been arrested. While serving his life sentence, Barney received his GED and a degree in criminal law.
Barney is now attending high schools around South Florida and educating high-school students on peer pressure. Mirarmar high school is one of them. He was scheduled to graduate in 1972. Barney's own experience of giving in to peer pressure left him sentenced in prison for life. He is hoping to spread the message that one slip on peer pressure can cost you your life and freedom. Putting emphasis on “hope, and educate yourself. It's empowerment.” Barney is currently a paralegal for Miami-Dade County and works with youth centers throughout Miami.
