Sarah Shourd Released From Prison
Sarah Shourd was finally released after the so-called diplomatic deal was reached. However there were no clear details whether the family actually paid the half million bail or not. Shourd's mother and several U.S. diplomats happily received her at a royal airfield in Oman. U.S. officials claimed that Oman played a very critical role in organizing the payment of the bail that ensured the same would not violate the economic sanctions imposed by U.S. to Iran. A private Omani jet brought Shourd out of Iran after over 13 months in jail.
On the other hand, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, the two companions of Shourd, are still in prison awaiting their indictments in an Iranian court for being accused of spying. Shourd would be tried in absence. When convicted, the two will be imprisoned for up to 10 years.
The release of Shourd was lauded by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, saying that he welcomed the release of Sarah Shourd and appreciated the flexibility of the Iranian government in so doing. The UN Chief was also optimistic about the release of the remaining American hikers as soon as possible so that they could also be immediately reunited with their respective families.
