Indian Bus Plunges into River, 17 Dead
Road carnage has become common in India and this was one of the many cases.
The bus was carrying around 80 people. Another 35 are also feared to have perished. The bus crashed into a river in central India.
Rescue teams quickly responded after eyewitnesses saw the incident and reported it. The bus tried to cross a flooded bridge and something went horribly wrong. Either it lost the direction or was swept by the current, onlookers said.
Many passengers were on board, 17 bodies have been retrieved downstream, and 25 people have already been rescued. The Wednesday evening accident occurred 100 kilometers from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.
Rescue efforts are ongoing with specialist teams doing the best to save lives and retrieve bodies from the carnage. Bodies might have been washed away and we have to retrieve them as well, Police inspector general Pawan Jain told WikiPeers.
India has a very high rate of road death tolls in the world. The WHO has ranked the country as the worst case of road carnage, blaming the accidents on careless driving, poor roads and over speeding among other factors. India hopes to make this change through putting caps on driving speed and improving roads and increasing traffic patrols.
