PM Julia Gillard Gains One-Seat Majority in the House of Parliament
The PM's Labor Party was already forming a minority government to govern Australia until the two independent lawmakers threw support to her coalition. The two independent representatives were Tony Windsor and Robb Oakeshott who eventually fortified the Labor Party of PM Gillard with 76 seats of the 150-seat House of Representatives while the conservative opposition is now holding 74 seats. The decision of the two lawmakers was pivotal to chart the new advent of PM Gillard administration.
Bob Katter, also an Independent MP was quoted as saying that he backed up the conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott but the other two just did not see the same perspective as he did. He noted that when the two of his colleagues will decide to back PM Gillard, the latter would have to enjoy one vote up in the House of Parliament.
It was reported that PM Gillard only needed at least two of the remaining independents to receive a commanding majority in the lower House of Parliament after no sure winner was declared in last August 21 elections. The two planned to conduct a news conference to reveal their decision whom to support. By getting the two independent MP, this will certainly end the wait after the election deadlock.
Now that the two signified their intentions to support her government, PM Gillard gained a one-seat majority. When the Labor Party will be able to gain a majority in the House of Parliament, its plan is to impose a mining tax, undertake the $38 billion national telecoms project and begin to work together for a carbon market. It can be noted that the conservative opposition expressed their disapproval on all three policies.
Meanwhile, the benchmark stock index of Australia had a slow change during the morning trade, while its money was below the one-month high to register at $0.9150.
