A 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck New Zealand. The quake was highly rated on the Richter scale. Damage of varying extent has been reported though no official reports about it have been released. The quake struck the second largest city in the country.

The quake was described as very destructive and extremely severe. Authorities are yet to release actual extent of damage.

The current weather conditions have caused doubtful geographical analysis of the global climate. Global warming is being blamed for change in climatic conditions and erratic weather patterns. Earthquakes are associated with geological changes in the earth’s surface with varying effects being reported. Tsunamis and hurricanes have become commonplace with latest earthquake numbers increasing rapidly. Haiti remains the highest causality in recent past. The Christchurch earthquake is the latest of severe earthquakes this year.

New Zealand geological services report that the severity of the earthquake was amazing. The Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake damage, according to residents was shocking. One resident told Wikipeers "a whole row of shops collapsed right in front of me! I can’t believe it!" Authorities through the state Radio have appealed for calm urging residents to stay where they are and to be careful. A radio presenter was heard on radio appealing to the people not to panic "Do not panic!" He also advised people to check on their siblings, especially the children and the elderly.

The Christchurch earthquake was reported at 4:35 am New Zealand time (1:35 pm EST). It was recorded in the US by the Geological Survey who recorded it at 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale.
