Flooding in China
Flooding is a global issue related to the destruction of our environment and even if it is a natural phenomenon, one can’t help but blame human being for being responsible to flooding. Causes vary from illegal logging to non-proper waste disposal which blocks the drainage system and eventually cause flooding.
Recently in Southern China, ninty people died, more than fifty are missing and 1.4 million people has lost their home from the flash flood that occurred in the central district of China’s manufacturing region. Several rivers overflowed, the water reservoir collapsed which caused landslide, damaged roads, and power cut off.
Homes are almost submerged in water and people have started climbing their roof tops calling for evacuation assistance from soldiers in uniform. When the storm hit the mainland it left students stranded in schools and others in work making it more difficult for them to locate their families. There are thirty five people killed in landslide. This flood was another kick in the gut for Chinese government which has suffered from the worst drought in Southern China in a century not so long ago, affecting sixty one million people having no sufficient water to drink.
There are reports that about nine local authority officials are being punished for neglecting their duty. About 5.5 million of people have been affected the flood and the rate will surely be higher in the next few days.
In 1931, Central China had suffered from heavy snow storm and rainfall which eventually lead to heavy flooding. The well known Yellow River is one of the rivers that overflowed along with three others causing the sudden gush of water. It is said that the catastrophe had killed around 3.7 to 4 million people and has affected twenty eight million people, homeless or had loss their source of living, this phenomenon has been noted to be the worst disaster ever in the twentieth century. Soon after that several deadly flooding followed.
There are several types and causes of flooding and they are as follows:
Riverine
This is type caused by overflowing river and flooding the nearby land area.
Estuarine
The deadly combination of the sea tidal and storm winds causes the flooding.
Coastal
This type of flooding is caused by sea storm, like hurricane or tsunami. Flooding caused by tropical and extra tropical cyclone falls under this flooding type.
Catastrophic
This type is caused by sudden and unanticipated event, like collapsing of a dam or earthquake.
Muddy
This is the type is caused by runoff produced by crop land or nearby hill.
