All you need to know about terrier grooming
Terriers are great family dogs: they are smart and nonaggressive, great with kids and they are generally small and medium size. This is why a lot of people love having them around.
There are some basic terriers grooming steps that every terrier owner should follow. Most terriers – like Yorkshire, Sky or Tibetan terriers – have long, thick coats. They need to be brushed regularly if you want their coat to remain healthy, clean and shiny. Also, if you brushed them daily, you won’t have to pick dog hairs from the entire house. You need a special brush, designed for dogs, from the pet shop. When shopping for a brush, tell the vendor from the pet shop that you have a terrier. Terriers have very special coats, very thick and sometimes long, so the brush must be up to the job.
Fro a correct terrier grooming process, you also need a stripping knife. Stripping your terrier helps the fur to remain healthy, by removing dead hairs and the dirt and the dust. You can also clip the terriers’ coats, but this makes them lose the natural aspect of the fur. Clipping a terrier changes the texture of the fur an also the color. Especially if you intent to take your terrier to a dog show, you should avoid clipping your terrier’s coat. Instead of clipping the hair, you should use the stripping knife for stripping and or you can simply use your fingertips for plucking your terrier. Clipping the hair is a good idea in the summer, when it’s very hot, especially for young dogs. However, you should ask a professional groomer to perform this action. Not only that your dog will look strange if you do the clipping yourself, but you could even hurt the dog with the scissors.
Another very important thing you should know about terrier grooming is that you have to give a lot of attention to the eyes and ears area. If you don’t keep the hair in the area clean enough, the terrier will develop eyes and eras infections.
You don’t have to actually wash the terrier’s coat very often. Once every two months should be enough, if you brush the dog regularly, removing dust and dirt.
