Where to Start When Seeking a Marriage Counselor
People either assume they do not need counseling or that it is too late for counseling to do any good. Even though couples who are not in danger sometimes seek counseling to keep their marriages healthy, most avoid it like the plague.
What is marriage counseling?
Trained and experienced marriage therapists focus on creating strength and well being for couples in a long-term relationship. These meetings are typically short term averaging around twelve sessions per couple. Typically, these sessions are conducting together and separately, as it is easy to be open in a one on one setting. However, it is also important that couples work things out together and hear exactly where the other is coming from.
Who provides the counseling?
When entering into counseling, a professional Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) will conduct your sessions. This individual should be licensed and trained to deal with emotional and mental discords within the parameters of a couple or family. They have at least two years of experience and be trained in psychotherapy and other family systems. Your MFT could have a masters degree, doctorate, or some other post-graduate training from an accredited program. After education, each MFT must do supervised clinical work and take a state licensing or national exam.
How do I choose a counselor?
The best way to select the right counselor is through word of mouth or personal recommendations. This is not always possible, however, if you do not know anyone who has undergone counseling.
The next step is Internet research. Find websites for local MFTs that provide plenty of information. Once you find a handful of therapists you like from their website – it is time to pick up the phone. It is best if you narrow down you options to between 3 and 5. Many therapists will provide a short consultation over the phone and will certainly answer your questions. This is a great way to feel out for chemistry, as you do not want to sign up with a therapist you are not comfortable with.
How much does it cost?
While every therapist’s rates will vary, they often range between $75 and $200 per hour. For an average, expect somewhere around $100 an hour. However, for those who cannot afford that, there are MFTs willing to adjust rates based on income. Some insurance companies may cover marriage counseling.
