Picking Your Child's First Pet
A first pet is probably one of the most exciting experiences in a child’s young life. With a pet comes responsibility and with responsibility comes valuable lessons they will carry with them throughout their life.
When you are choosing a pet, it is best to ultimately let your child decide which animal they would like to have. Unless, your child is at a young age then you may want to pick for them. You want to make sure to pick something that the child will be able to help take care of. If they are at a young age, then give them the benefit of the doubt. Try seeing what they choose first. If it is something that you know they will be unable to handle then feel free to choose for them.
Look around at various pet stores. Variety can be a person’s best friend sometimes. Don’t pick the first puppy you see. You might be able to save money at another pet store. Don’t buy all the major essentials at the place that you purchase your pet. Go to Wal-Mart or Target for pet essentials. This will help you save money. Pet stores always over price their pet supplies.
When it is time to bring your new family member home then you will want to make them feel comfortable. Don’t hover around the animal a lot. Being in a new surrounding, is like being in a frightening place for the animal. They will be scared until they get used to it. Let them know you are there, but keep your distance. If you bought a cat or dog, then let them roam freely. Looking around and getting a view of their surroundings will help them feel more comfortable. If you buy a cat do not be surprised if the cat hides for a few days. Some animals do this until they get used to their surroundings and noises around them. Then they decide to venture out.
The last step to the process is to give your animal plenty of love and attention. Make sure you properly care for them and feed them. If you are buying a pet for a small child, it might be best to start out with a kitten or puppy. The animal will be able to grow with the child and it will make the pet even more special to the child.
