How to Get Your Toddler Ready for Preschool
It can make the difference between loving school and being afraid that first day.
Help your child feel comfortable by telling them about all the positive things about school. Let them know that even though mommy won’t be there during school that he or she won’t have to wait long before you come to pick them up. Let them know about making new friends and that there will still be play time.
Taking a tour of your child’s classroom and meeting their teacher might help them feel comfortable with the whole process. Let them explore and look around their classroom. Have them talk to the teacher. If they have their own cubby, show it to them and tell them it is there to put their lunch and coat in. They will love the idea that even though they are away from home, at least one thing will be theirs and only theirs.
At your local retailer, like Target, you can buy preschool workbooks. These cover early math, writing skills, shapes, colors and early science. They are a great way to get your child familiar with “homework.” Buy the stickers that have fun phrases on them and encouragement for your child. After completing a page, make sure to put a sticker on it. Children love rewards, so make sure to reward them in some way for doing a good job and trying.
Try to see if your child’s friends will be in the same class. If so then make sure to let them know that little Billy is going to be in their class. The day of their first day remind them of that fact in case they get nervous. When you arrive at the classroom, point out your child’s friend to them and ask the teacher if your child can sit next to them. This will help them feel more comfortable.
Get your child in a routine that the classroom might follow. Ask your teacher what sort of schedule they follow. Set aside 2 hours a day or the time frame that your child will be in preschool. Follow the schedule that the preschool laid out for you. This will help them transition from home life to school life. It will make it easier on the teacher as well. Your child will be use to the schedule so the transition will be easy.
Preschool can be a scary thing for kids. Don’t worry though, once they attend a few times it becomes natural. Preparing your toddler will help in the long run.
