What To Do When You Are Robbed
After all, it is their safe place right? It is their fortress that cannot be overturned by a stranger. Wrong. Burglary does happen.
Burglary is one of the most common thefts in America. In a yearly basis there are over 2,143,456 burglaries nationwide. 62% of them happen during daylight. 61.3% of burglaries are forced entries. This means that the burglary used direct force and strength to break into the home that was being burglarized.
If you are home when your house is being robbed it can be a scary and unnerving thing. It is a hard ordeal to recover from and sometimes takes a lot of work before feeling safe in your own home again. Knowing the steps to take, can make a big difference between staying alive or getting in harm’s way.
If you are alone at home and find your home being broken into, always think safety first. Try to call for the authorities if you are near a phone. If you are not near a phone and cannot reach a phone, another option is to find a safe exit in the room you are in. Do not leave the room you are in while you are being robbed if you have any doubts of the robber seeing you. That could put you in danger and just end badly.
Do not attempt to talk to the burglar. This rule is very important if they have a gun or any weapon on them. Never attempt to be the hero and fight them off either. Especially, if the burglar has firearms. This situation could end in death for you or serious harm done to you or your family.
After the burglar has gone, and after you have called the police, try searching for evidence. If you are a woman and the burglar has sexually assaulted you, do not shower. It will be tempting to do, but if you don’t do anything after the assault, authorities can perform a sexual assault test on you and possibly recover evidence. Any piece of clothing, dropped personal items the burglar had, or even hair samples can lead the police to your culprit.
If you are able to, than get a good description of the burglar for the police. Notice any birthmarks, tattoos, earnings or anything else that might stand out to the police. Keep a mental note of their height, eye color, what they were wearing and any other small details you can remember. If the burglar doesn’t know you are in the house, and you are in a specific room of the house that has access to a window, than look out the window to see if you can get a description of the burglars vehicle.
If you are able to get out of your house unnoticed, than go to a neighbors and call 911.
Try to move past this horrific ordeal. It might be hard at first but you will push through. Just remember also, that you will one day feel safe in your own house again.
