Piercing Your Baby's Ears
Parents have the option of whether or not to pierce their baby’s ears.
If you have thought about taking that leap and piercing your child’s ears for the first time, or you are just thinking about it, you’ll want to keep these tips in mind.
The first step to piercing your baby or child’s ears is to check around for professionals who will do it. Always have a professional do it. That way you know everything is sanitary and it gets done the correct way. Look around your area for professionals who will do it. Some professionals refuse to work on children under a certain age. Even with the parents consent.
Always check on referrals and sanitary practices when piercing your child’s ears. Piercing kid’s ears may seem like a small thing. But if you use a professional who is unsanitary and has had complaints in the past, it could turn into infection and money down the drain also.
Always use stud earrings. This is especially important with babies. No matter how cute the earring, you don’t want to risk not using a stud and having your child tug at their earlobe or rip out the earring. It could cause harm to your baby or infection.
When selecting earrings, it is important to use stud earrings and to make sure they are 14K value or higher. People are more likely to have less of a reaction to 14k earrings than they are to anything of a lesser grade. Using nickel free earrings might help prevent an allergic reaction also.
After you pierce your child’s ear, always use proper hygiene techniques. Clean them twice a day using rubbing alcohol and cotton balls. Wet a cotton ball with alcohol, wipe the front and back of the earlobe. If you have studs in your ears still than push the earring back and forth and clean around the surrounding area. Leave the studs in for the first few weeks to ensure the holes do not close. Make sure to randomly push the earring forwards and backwards and twirl it during the day. This will help to keep skin from growing around the earring and will keep the hole open.
Piercing your child’s ears can be a special occasion. A rite of passage, in a way. They will feel proud of their new found freedom.
