A General Look at Different Types of Eye Surgery
Eye surgery is a general term used to describe many different medical procedures. Although most surgeries done to the eye or its adnexa are given on an outpatient basis, there are important things that you might need to know about eye surgeries. The following article is not meant to give professional advice; it is a general look at the types of surgery procedures done to the eye area.
The surgery that is growing in popularity and can be found at just about any city in America is laser surgery. This surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist and only takes a day to recover from. Laser eye surgery is popular for a good reason; most people have perfect eyesight after the surgery is performed.
Another very common surgical procedure performed on the eye is cataract surgery. Cataracts are known for the cloudiness of the eye area and can be helped by surgery after being diagnosed by a professional. Cloudiness is typically caused by age, but can be present in those with certain diseases. Sometimes the removal of the lens in the eye is necessary in order to revive the sight of the patient. Cataract surgery is the most common type of eye surgery because cataracts are common in the elderly. There are some precautions to take after the procedure is performed but the best thing that can be done is to rest.
Another eye surgery that is fairly common is glaucoma surgery. This type of surgery is performed by an eye doctor after diagnosis is made. Glaucoma affects the optic nerve located in the eye and commonly produces vision loss and increased intraocular pressure. There are many different procedures that can be performed on a patient with glaucoma but sometimes it takes a combination of the procedures to help the patient recover from the disease.
The third most common surgical procedure is surgery on the muscles of the eye. This surgery is normally performed on patients that have issues with the tension of the muscle that controls the movement of the eye. It can also benefit patients with problems in the way their eye sits in the socket. Procedures that have to do with the muscle can usually be seen within 24 hours.
Although many see eye surgery as a simple and invasive procedure, there are a couple things that the patients need to do before having it done. Depending on the type of surgery done, the doctor will inform the patient of the precautionary steps that need to be done before, during and after the eye surgery.
