Info about Mesothelioma Peritoneal Treatment
This cancer is caused due to the exposure of humans to asbestos particles. Asbestos particles lie latent inside the human body and over a period of time (about 20-30 years) these particles begin to affect the abdominal cavity leading to cancer. The difference between a normal mesothelioma cancer and the peritoneal mesothelioma is its latency period (Mesothelioma has a latency of about 30-50 years). The symptoms of this disease include anemia, fatigue, digestion problems, weight loss, frequent fever, bowel obstructions etc.
The diagnosis of this cancerous disease is quite challenging in the sense that most patients do tend to neglect it because the symptoms are not so forceful that the patients take it very seriously. Moreover, the diagnosis can be done only with the help of imaging system which might not give a comprehensive answer to the doctors. However, with the improvements in science and technology, doctors are able to diagnose this disease without much difficulty.
The type of Mesothelioma Peritoneal treatment is determined by a number of factors.
The most determining factor of them all is the stage of the cancer in your body. Though, there are no established staging processes for this disease, the doctors have their own boundary lines that divide Peritoneal Mesothelioma into different stages. In a generalized staging system, Peritoneal Mesothelioma is considered to be in the first stage when a localized lesion develops in the abdominal cavity. The second stage is when these lesions get bulked up and start spreading inside the abdominal cavity at an alarming rate. In the third stage, this disease starts spreading to other parts like the colon, liver etc. And finally, the last stage of Peritoneal Mesothelioma is considered when it spreads to other organs like lung or any other organ outside the abdominal cavity.
Mesothelioma Peritoneal treatment can be surgical methods in case of stage I and Stage II where the tumor or the lesions are removed entirely from the cavity. For the next two stages, Intra-Peritoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy has been found to be very effective. However, other Mesothelioma Peritoneal treatment methods like Cytoreductive surgery, multimodality treatment (Which is a combination of cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy treatments) have also been found to be very effective.
