In 1988 a company by name of Blackstone Financial Management was established by Robert Kapito, Sue Wagner, Ralph Schlosstein, and Larry Fink. Ralph Schlosstein was another well know personality of the group. He used to be a White House aide. The same company is now known as Blackrock Investments.
With the acquisition of Barclays Global Investors in December 2009, Blackrock achieved the distinction as the largest money management company on the globe with an investment related business worth above 3,190 billion dollars. As on 31st of December, 2010 Blackrock Investments is managing a total of 3.561 trillion dollar investments.

Acquisitions and merges contributed to the company’s phenomenal growth in recent years. Since 2005, the company is on an acquisitions spree, taking one or the other company under its fold every year. In 2005 Blackrock Investments acquired MetLife owned State Street Management, a mutual fund company. The acquisition is said to give a head start to the company in equity business.2006 saw the merger with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers. In 2007, a fund of funds business firm called Quellos Capital Management came under the company’s banner.
